In a recent project at Sumas Auto Glass Abbotsford, BC, we tackled a challenging windshield replacement. The customer from Auburn Street had a significantly cracked windshield, primarily in the driver's critical viewing area, necessitating a full replacement rather than a simple repair.
Our initial step involved a meticulous assessment of the damage. Recognizing the severity, we facilitated an ICBC insurance claim under the client's comprehensive coverage, ensuring all procedures were aligned with insurance protocols.
The preparation phase included ordering the specific windshield required for the vehicle. We expediently scheduled the replacement for the same day to minimize inconvenience to our client. Prior to commencing the replacement, our team conducted a routine, yet crucial, step of documenting the damage through photographs, as mandated by ICBC. We also verified that the windshield we received matched the vehicle's specifications.
A diagnostic pre-scan of the vehicle's systems was executed to preemptively identify any potential electronic issues. The replacement process commenced with the removal of various components, such as the wiper blades, cowl, rearview mirror, and the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) camera. Notably, the vehicle featured an exposed pinch weld – a design with no protective mouldings around the glass, exposing the painted surfaces. To avoid any damage to these areas, our team utilized an EASYWIRE cut-out tool, a strategic choice to ensure a damage-free removal.
Post removal, the old windshield's remnants were cleared, and the new glass was prepped with a primer for optimal urethane adhesion. Following the careful placement of the new windshield, we meticulously reassembled all previously removed components, ensuring everything was restored to its original position.
The final steps involved a thorough interior detailing of the vehicle and the critical calibration of the ADAS camera. This calibration, termed 'Dynamic Calibration', is an essential process where the camera adjusts itself by reading road lines during a drive, a procedure taking approximately 15-20 minutes. Upon completion, a post-scan was conducted to ensure no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) were present, confirming the vehicle's systems were functioning correctly post-replacement.
